I hate to say it, but this loss falls heavy on Lorenzo Romars shoulders. I can hear the naysayer’s right now, “but he was coach of the year,” “but he brings in great local talent”, “but he gets us to the NCAA tournament.” All good things, but at some point, you need to be able to get to the second level in the NCAA tournament which means the elite 8 and the final four. Time and time again, the UW offense and defense play calling looks like it’s drawn up in the sand. When was the last time you saw a back door cut, or a screen up top for a three point shooter, or a back cut for a lob alley oop dunk. In bound plays? Wow, I honestly can’t think of the last time I saw UW score on an out of bounds play vs. just throwing the ball into the backcourt. East coast teams are stronger than Pac 10 teams and Purdue wore us down, bottom line in the first half. How about getting your team ready with having the second team practice with in your face hand checking type defense which is exactly how East coast teams play. How about pressing in the second half? UW desperately needed a point guard for this team and I knew they would be one and done in the tournament this year with no one that averaged more than 3 assist a game. UW is a factory right now for producing great scores (Roy, Robinson) and they get drafted in the selfish NBA and flourish. Great college basketball teams play more team ball and have point guard that average at least 6 assist a game. Check history people, most of the time teams in the final four have a great point guard.

So, you have to ask yourself, do you settle for being a one and done team in the NCAA or do you take the next step? I think Romar is going to have to either change his coaching style, become more disciplined, or hire smarter assistance you know how to make in game changes to WIN. Otherwise, UW is looking a lot like Gonzaga or the Atlanta Braves….great teams in the regular season, but chokers in the big games. ALL Seattle teams are great at home (Seahawks for example) but cannot win big games on the road (UW this year for example Kansas and Florida). The worst part of this game was that it was essentially a home game in Portland.

UW fans, it’s time to stop saying “wait till next year.” This is college basketball people and you lose a top talent like Brockman, it’s tough the next year. I say Romar needs to rethink his coaching style or UW will just continue to be a glorified local all star team that doesn’t care about advancing.

We're back like a Chris Berman call of a home run..."back, back, back....HOME RUN!"

After traveling around the world for 6 months, it's time to get down to business and talk SEATTLE SPORTS!

Lots going on since I left....yeah, the entire Seattle Sports World had a horrible year in 2008 with the Washington Huskies Men's Basketball team being the one lone bright spot (I know, technically it's 2009, but we need something to smile about right?)

Ah, but things are looking much brighter these days......

#1: Housh signs with Hawks. Big move, great to hear and much needed. I'm glad Keith Gilbertson is DONE as a Hawks coach....a fat man who never told his players to strech before games...hmmmm, wonder why Burleson and others went down so quickly last year? I'm still a HUGE fan of taking Crabtree with the #4 pick. It's been since Alexander in 2001 has the Hawks gone after a young talented dynamic offensive player. Let's not be THAT team that either trades this pick or bypasses on this guy. His numbers are incredible and it's not like he's playing for Eastern Washington or something. See Santanio Holmes for why drafting young WR's is a good idea. Moreover, Seattle has a talented, quick defense and does not need to waste this pick here on a DT. Everyone thinks DT are important, right? Look at SB winner Pittsburgh and you think again. How often do you hear of their DT's being mentioned? Not often, because their LB's, Safeties, and CB's are the real reason that D ticks....Seattle's D is set up similar to Pitts. Now that dumb ass John Marshall is gone, our Defense should excel.

#2: Griffey is back. Wow, is all I can. So what if he hits 20 HR's with a .230 batting average. He puts excitement in this team that needs it desperately. If Beltre can hit 35 bombs and if Bedard goes 17-7, we got a chance....

#3: Sounders are BACK. Pretty sweet to have MLS back in Seattle. Better than the Steve Zungal days with the Tacoma Stars, that's for sure.

#4: WA Men's hoops. WOW, again, is all I can say. Romar has done an amazing job recruiting top local talent, bottom line. Now, the real question is if he can get this team beyond the sweet 16. The real test for this team will come when we face another physical East Coast Team like Louisville that plays a harder brand of basketball. Sorry, but the Pac 10 is soft compared to the East Coast and Romar is going to have to adjust to that as UW advances in the tourney.

That's all for now.....

can't believe some of the responses I'm hearing from people on this subject..."let them advertise" That's the lazy type of attitude that puts fans in these situations that will continue to get worse. Get up, say something about what you feel is right, and write a letter or protest if you feel passionate about something. I, for one, am tired of seeing the walls in MLB splattered with ads, that's my beef. So, instead of just sitting there, I'm trying to be more proactive and stop this over commercialization of MLB. If the fans don't say anything, it's only going to get worse, and worse, and worse.

My comments about the NFL is simply they have not sold out the field or players uniforms to corporate USA. Baseball's ads in the outfield have everything to do with Tivo my friends and NOTHING to do about ticket prices. Tivo elminates commercials, therefore, these massive corporations have to get their logo in front of you in one way shape or form....so, they plaster their ads all over the backstop and outfield walls, where all the highlights show their ads.

So go ahead, be lazy, think that your word has no affect on the outcome of things. Or, get up and do something about it and tell MLB that it's not OK to blanket the field with ads. In 1776, the average American was hit with rough 100+ ads a day (TV, billboards, etc.). In 2008, the average American gets hit with over 6,000 ads per DAY!!!!

You think ESPN would ever run a story about this? Heck no, because they make money on those ads as well.

Please people, let's get one thing straight, baseball owners are NOT hurting for money. These ads in the outfiled simply just pad their already PHAT wallets, bottom line.

I’m writing a letter on behalf of our 50K+ fan base at Seattle Sports Blog.com to all major league baseball teams regarding putting an end to the absurd amount of corporate advertising at Major League Baseball stadiums. It absolutely sickens me to watch games these days and to see every inch of outfield wall covered (more like littered) with corporate logos. Moreover, the once small ad behind home plate is now 6 times the size it once was and now features four to five companies back there. How distracting do you think that is now to the pitcher, with all those annoying colors and banner of lame corporate advertising? What’s even worse is that now you are allowing ads to be placed on foul poles!

I attended a San Francisco Giants game the other day and was blown away having seen first hand how intrusive corporate ads are now affecting the game. The left field wall has a lame Chevron ad that actually goes above the normal outfield wall. Or, how about the Levis banner being flown from the right field flag poll? With no replay in baseball, what’s an ump supposed to do if a ball hits the flag, but not the poll? Home run? Why do you allow these corporate marketing managers to alter the playing field in baseball? MLB has been extremely profitable over these last several years. Great job Selig, you’ve sold out to corporate America and look no more professional than the Arena football league. Let me guess Bud, you’ll have McDonald’s ads on players jersey’s soon enough, along with a Walmart logo plaster all over the outfield.

I’ll stick to watching real sports like NFL football and College basketball that haven’t sold out like MLB. Maybe some day you’ll wake and realize that fans do care about the integrity of the game vs. corporate sponsorship. Just because corporate advertising is losing money in TV ads because of Tivo, doesn’t mean you need to ruin the game. Tell these corporate tools to spend their money on the teams websites, where fans are actually going and are ok viewing ads. Advertising is moving to online, so should MLB and not into the field of play. It sure is refreshing when ESPN will play a classic game from 1985. Guess what MLB? Not a SINGLE ad appears on any outfield wall. Do what teams used to do and put players numbers that are retired and sell the logos of other major league teams. I commend both Wrigley field and Coors Field for both not allowing over excessive corporate advertising in their ballparks. I puke watching games played at San Francisco, Arizona, Cincinnati, Houston, Florida, and others simply because of the corporate advertising.

This letter is being sent to all major league baseball teams, being posted on my blog, forwarded to several major league baseball blogs as well and anywhere else that it will be added as an RSS feed. Let it be known that there are several fans that believe in this theory that we need to stop the corporate advertising madness that is taking over this great game. What’s next, Walmart Yankee Stadium?

Sincerely,

James Linden

It’s time for change in Marinerville Seattle and unless you do something about it, it’s going to be the same old song and dance year after year with this front office. Here is the contact information for Nintendo Japan. Again, I highly suggest writing them and letting them know your concerns with Chuckie Armstrong, Howard Lincoln, McLaren, and Bavasi. Lou and Gilleck were the only winners this organization has ever seen and both of these guys did not like Lincoln and Armstrong. Lincoln and Armstrong are getting zero pressure from Nintendo, a very passively run company who doesn't want to ruffle any feathers. Let Nintendo of Japan know you are tired of these guys.
Fyi, do not write to Nintendo of Redmond as it will not get through to the correct ownership.

I am sick and tired of watching this team lose, lose, lose. You think the Yankees would have made whole sale changes by now with this payroll? Absolutely. Chuckie Armstrong, Lincoln, and Ellis have been part of this LOSING organization for waaaaay too long and it’s time for change. Time to hire a real front office that cares about winning rather than revenue.
Take a look at some of the moves Bavasi has made…including firing Bob Melvin, who’s Arizona team is tops in the National League.

Well, at least they were able to pull off the final game of an atroshish home stand. Maybe Ibanez's HR will be the shot heard round the Puget Sound and will spark a fire under this teams assess. Who knows, but as of now, this team is just going through the motions, listless, backbone less, etc. etc. etc. Washburn seems to be having some issues with Kenji's lack of english, which is interesting now that Clement and Burke are up.

Bedard goes tonight and let's hope he can start us off on the road trip with a WIN. Sexson's riding the pine, which will be interesting to see how we do with him out of the lineup. Personally, I think the guy is a $15M a year cancer, so maybe the team will thrive with him being out.

The road less traveled is the road this team needs to head down....like winning 6 or 8 games in a row or something along those lines.

It's about attitude. Most pro sports teams have enough talent to go all the way, but it boils down to someone being able to take that talent and motivate them beyond just their paychecks. The Mariners are what I call "a paycheck ballclub." They are well paid (too well paid if you look at Richie Rich Sexson and WashandBurn), but lack the desire or baseball club tradition to get to the World Series. So, what does that indicate? That Chuckie Armstrong and Howard Lincoln are fine going through the motions and have little motivation to get to the World Series. The Mariners have very little history to them and unless someone turns around an alltime losing ballclub with fresh, smart, enthusiastic attitude, this team will continue to be subpar over, and over, and over again.

There are immediate subtle changes that can change attitude as well. For one, move the fricking fences in at Safeco. NO hitter wants to come to Safeco and see his batting average drop and his HR totals plumment. This kills your marketability in MLB and you're less likely to get a phat contract in free agency. This is a bit of a psychological stretch, but Seattle is a GREY enough city as is....can we BAN the grey uniforms? The team looks stronger in dark blue or stark white....just like how the Hawks love wearing the home blue uniforms (if you recall, we won in 1983 in the playoffs in Miami and a lot of people attributed it to us being able to wear our home blues.

I've been calling for Bavasi's head for a long time, but I think he's actually good for the team and has been making better decisions this last year. Chuckie, Howard, and even McLaren could use a new job.....like unenjoyment checks if you ask me.

This team, oh, this fricking team. There might be some truth to the matter that they are a cursed team. Before we go out and get a bunch of voodo dolls, however, why don't we look at the root of the problem? McLaren, Howard Lincoln, and Chuckie Armstrong have GOT TO GO. Nintendo must obvioiusly not care about losing millions of dollars and be the laughing stock of baseball with this team, considering it continues to renew these guys contracts. Bavasi?

Ok, I admit, I've been a bit harsh on this guy, but he has actually made some good decisions that seem to be paying off.

Check out the numbers on some of his moves for 2008, not bad.

ACQUISITIONS
Bedard 1.82 ERA
Silva 4.20 ERA

DEPARTURES
Jones .233 AVG
Sherrill 4.97 ERA
Guillen .165
Broussard .159 (rumors are swirling that he's about to be DFA'd)

However, it some of the other moves this guy has done that you have to scratch your head at: Jurrasic Carl Everett, Washburn (who I actually loved the aquisition at the time, but his curveball has lost mojo since coming to Seattle), letting go of Olivio (who is tearing it up), signing Johji to a 3 year extension when he's hitting .183, Brad Wilkerson this year, Scott Spizio, and on, and on, and on.

Bottom line, Pat Gillick knew this environment and the HUGE outfield fences at Safeco. So, he went after hitters vs. HR kings. A guy who hits .350 anywhere else is going to hit .310 in Seattle, no arguing that. The air is thicker and the fences are WAY TOO DEEP in Safeco. Move the fences in, for Heavan's sake! Griffey complained about that when the park was first build, why not do what Detroit did? Hitters talk, and no one, I mean no one, wants to come to Seattle to play because of the ballpark configuration.

Hmmmm, interesting moves I felt on draft day. The guy that everyone seemed to think we were going to draft Keller was passed on by Seattle and instead used to pick up a DE/DL from USC. I like the fact that we are taking players from the west coast who won't complain as much about traveling up to Seattle for living in the city during their tenure. Seems a lot easier vs. taking people from the east coast and hoping they adjust. We definitely needed help with the run last year, hence the game in Green Bay when we got ran over. I still think a lot of our poor defense stems from the inability of John Marshall to call a good game. Up 14-0 on Green Bay people, and we proceeded to get our asses handed to us the rest of the game. I like the picks of the FB from West Virginia and the long snapper....definitely areas where we can use some help. I still think Seattle is a trade away from having that stud TE or another WR, but with Obamanu, Talyor, and others, we could, I say could, be ok for now at WR.

The Mariners? Are fricking struggling right now, absolutely struggling. Richie Sexson? Someone kidnap him, please. Kenji J? Why did we extend this guys contract I will never know. Vidro? Historically a great .300 hitter, but is struggling this year. You gotta wonder why Bavasi decides on bringing guys in here like Wilkerson and Sexson, who have historically hit in the .240-.250 range. Everyone by now should know that when you come to play in Seattle's spacious Safeco, you are just not going to hit for average as you did where ever you played before. Look at Cirillo, Beltre, Olivio, Aurilla, Sexson, etc, etc. The only exception seems to be Ibanez. So, the M's better start going after hitters like a Maglio Ordonez or start moving the fences in....which is something, if you recall, Griffey had a beef with when the stadium was first constructed. Detroit moved their fences in, why can't Seattle?

The Hawks released their 2008 schedule this year and for the most part, it's favorable. The real headache is having to travel to the east coast for FOUR games, which is a bit much. No love, once again.

Looks like another 10-6 to 11-5 Seahawks record with ole' Holmy at the helms. Guess what? Expect another first round home win followed by a loss on the road the next week.

Prove me wrong Holmgren, mix up the offense, draft a solid TE, and call a few trick plays from time to time and we have a shot at a 13-3 record and home field advantage.

Otherwise.....it's more of the same old Hawks

Seattle Sonics update:

Oh, Mr. Shultz, you think you can win back the town of Seattle by suing Clay Bennett? Think again...your over priced tasteless coffee chain is about to dry up in Seattle. You tore the hearts out of a lot of fans in Seattle, and for that, you will NEVER be favored again in this town. You'll be known as a Martyr in this town for the rest of your life. Better do like Boeing did and move your lame ass and your corporate executives to Chicago or somewhere other than Seattle.

Congrads to Kansas for the win last night, although I was sort of rooting for Calipari to finally get a championship. That was a great shot to see by Chalmers and one we'll see over and over and over again I'm sure. Memphis had an amazing season and I'm not on the same page with everyone that the free throw shooting is what killed them. If you look at the stats from the game, Memphis had a 5 man rotation, that's it. Im sorry, no matter how good your starting 5 is, you need some type of contribution from the bench. Well, we'll see if Calipari decides to stick around after that tough, tough loss.

For the Mariners? Things are looking bleak at this point in the season. Great starting pitching, but that's about it. Sexon is garbage and should be sent to Navascotia for all I care. He's a joke, he stikes out too much, and will NEVER, EVER hit over .250 again. Wilkerson? What the hell is this guys problem? A .059 batting average? Why not stick Morse in there? I'd take singles over strikeouts and grounders any day of the week. Seattle is seriously going to have to consider Barry Bonds, who could at least bring a threat to the team with his bat. Ibanez is doing well, but there is little other threat on this team.

The biggest problem right now is the bullpen though. Gotta get Putz back and gotta get O'Dumb-ass-O'Flarety out of the rotation.

      Seattle Mariners Blog:

Please, someone out there, kidnap Richie Sexson and take him far, far away from playing baseball in the major leagues for the Seattle Mariners. You really think this team is going to be able to make the post season with this guy batting 4th? Another stellar performance last night with 3 strikeouts (one with the bases loaded) and an error. Hey Richie Rich, great job in being a freak at 6-8 and getting into the majors and making zillions of dollars. Guess what? Your time is up! Get out while you can, get out while you can still show your face in the state you grew up in. You CANNOT HIT!!! You will NEVER hit over .250!!!!!!! I'd rather see Morse in there at 1st base, a guy that can at least hit .275!!!! I'd take a sacrafice fly with the bases loaded vs. a strikeout any day of the week. We in Seattle can assess good talent, and you are not good talent. Why do you think we boooooed Shaun Alexander so much last year? Because he can NO longer break a 25 yard plus run.

Prove us wrong oh Richie Rich, but your days are done. Go somewhere else, give this team a shot at competiting with the Angels.
