Washington Huskies Mens Basketball Blog:
What an up and down game last night, truely a fun one to watch if you are a UW hoops fans. That was the type of game that can give a young team some momentum going into New York. I'll tell you this, though, Texas A&M is a much stronger team than Utah and we'll have our hands full.
Here are some highlights from the game last night, good and bad:
Positive:
1. Brockman, nuff said. That guy WON that game for UW last night single handedly. I hope, hope, hope he stays one more year
2. Overton: my first opportunity to see that guy play and he is the real-deal Holyfield. He's soooo much faster than Dentmon and reads the court soooo much better than Dentmon. Once he starts to hit his shots, he'll be the full package (was 2-8 last night)
Things to work on:
1. My first problem with last nights game was WHERE WAS THE CROWD???? How embarrassing to have the game on national TV and only have 7,000 fans there. You think Duke playing Middle Tennessee state would not sell out? The student section looked lively, but come on people, GO TO THE GAME!
2. Defensively, I still question Romar's ability to read and react to hot players. Jonnie Brewer was lighting us up last night, period. Does Romar understand how to do call a box-in-one??? He finally brought in Holiday who seemed to control things for a while.
3. Dentmon: Yeah, I'm going to get some flack from people here, but the guy is still very unstable with the ball. He STILL committed 3 turnovers last night and judging by the replay of the game, should have had 5 or six accounted to him. Yes, he can score, yes, I love his penetration into the lane, but for heaven's sake, CUT DOWN ON THE TO's! Mark my words, if Romar doesn't play favorites, our starting line-up should be: Brockman, Pondexter, Overton, Smith, and Appleby.
4. In bounds plays: our baseline inbounds play are horrible under the basket. Every play, the guy out of bounds sends the ball back to half court, of which we had a few turnovers there as well. CUT, SCREEN, do something here Romar with your play calling. You can easily score on at least 1-2 of these a game under the basket.
5. Weights: It is just me, or is everyone on UW looking 'soft' these days (besides Brockman, but he's a natural brick of a body). Pondexter, and especially Dentmon, do not look like they EVER hit the weights. You look at a Kentucky or Texas A&M, they are beefy and strong. May be they are all taking roids, I don't know, but we need to beef up.
Overall, great win, let's keep it UP!!
