A deplorable showing for the US Soccer team in their first 2006 World Cup game, bottom line. Mark SSB's words, unless there are drastic measures taken to improve the US's overall view of soccer WORLDWIDE, these teams will continue to be a pretender in "Futbol."
Unfortunately, the US does not see soccer as a major sport compared to baseball, football, basketball, and hockey. Until MLS is able to provide a sparked interest in soccer nationally, it's nearly impossible to compete with the market share of those other sports. It's unfortunate to say, but the US doesn't give a damn about soccer, and the low fan support in Germany is an example of this.
The game vs. czech republic soccer was a terrible showing by the US squad. What did that game show us? That the US needs to be practicing together more as a group. There were reports that the combination of Donovan, McBride, and Pope (3 of our top players) had played a total of 60 minutes TOGETHER...alltime! It's like an allstar game out there...no team play. Their passing was sloppy and they were lobbing balls all over the place without challenging for headers. Overall, a poor, poor performance and we got spanked.
