Mariners pound rangers, 14-5

It appears that by moving Beltre into the #2 spot, he's more focused on producing singles vs. swinging for the fences (3 for 6 today w/ 3 singles, 2 RBI's, and 1 run scored). Moreover, moving Lopez into the #3 spot I think will be a good move. He's a .300 hitter w/ some pop in his bat. I'm fine w/ Beltre not hitting 30+ HR's if he's doing this type of hitting....he could easily be a .275 hitter w/ higher RBI totals and runs scored in the #2 spot. He's solid defensively, that's for sure.

Hernandez pitches so-so today, giving up the grand slam that otherwise ruined a solid outing. He'll need to pay attention to these type of mistakes and sock them away in the memory bank.

7 games back folks.....time to go on a 4-7 game winning streak, eh?

Mariners blog update, Seahawks, and more

Oh those M's, my oh my? Lose 2-0 to a guy that was pitching for the second time ever in MLB? A guy that was traded from Oakland for John Koronka? I mean, can't this team lose to a #1 pick who's been coveted as a prime time starter, etc, etc.? No, this team continues to struggle and has a toilet bowl for a line-up. Sexson? Please bring back the Dave Valle drink special....Sexson's hitting .206, which is about the price of a PBR in a can. .206 people. Henry Cotto hit better than that and he was paid $85,000 a year in 1993! Something has got to change...I'm sure the management (whom you all know I love) continues to say "We're only 6 games back." Soon to be 20 games my friends out there in Seattleland.

Also, anyone else check out Peter King's prediction for Superbowl XLI? Cowboys and Pitts? Well, if Pitt can get the same type of ref love they got last year, I'm sure they can get to as many SB's as they want to! Cowboys though? Unless otherwise proven, I still think the NFC championship comes through Seattle. Who does Dallas have at RB? And Bledsoe? He's done, done, done.....

Sonics grab #10 pick in 2006

We were hoping for a top 7, but alas, #10 it is. Can this team finally draft someone good and not trade away this pick? Scottie Pippen, Bobby Jackson, and Doug Christie all turned out to be stellar players....and we traded them all away. Rich King, Sherrell Ford? Some of the drafts biggest B-U-S-T of all time! Collison, Petro, and Ridnour have been solid so far.....

Here's our analysis: Hope that one of the stud swingman stay in the draft until the #10 pick: Morrison, Roy, or Gay all are projected to go high, but if one of them is to fall, TAKE THEM!!!! Otherwise, I like either Sheldon Williams or Reddick....probably more Reddick. I think he has a chance to be a solid Steve Kerr type player. Can't dunk, can't defend, but man, can he shoot and pass. He'd be a good solid backup to Ray Allen right now.

Anyone else have ideas for players they should take? Too much risk w/ a Duke player?

Mariners 3 game sweep

Those stock market M's are up 3 points this week w/ a great 3 game sweep of the Padres. Let's give it up for a few players:

Ichiro: hitting .314 now and really coming through in the clutch lately. He is the key to this team's success, bottom line

Carl Everett: our top power guy right now, hitting .265 w/ 7 HR's. So far, so good for this guy, but you never know when he might implode

Lopez: Team MVP still, hitting .304 w/ 6 HR's and 34 RBI's, which is leading the team

Washburn: we've been hard on this guy this year, but his 2-5 record is misleading given a 3.81 ERA

If they can keep this up against Baltimore, they can close the gap on the 3 game lead held by Oakland. This division is going to be rocky all year long at best.

Mariners blog

Here we go again, on the downturn of a 3 game losing streak to the A's....and the rollercoaster ride to a sub-par .500 season. When is the NBA draft? When do the Hawks start playing again? When does UW Hoops start again? Getting swept is one thing, getting your ass handed to you is another.

Let's face the facts here people....and NOT sugercoat everything that the Seattle papers are trying to convey:

1. Felix Hernandez is not healthy enough to be playing (or, he's just not ready this year). Phenom? Yes at 19, but he's 2-5 this year w/ a 5.00+ era and fading fast after that deplorable A's game. Send him to the minors and get him "major league ready."

2. Bozo Basavi's 2 major, major pick up's are not performing. Beltre? .202, 2 HR's. Sexson? 201 w/ 4 HR's and close to leading the way in strikeouts again in 2006. The Mariners will not be a good team until the get rid of Basavi, Howard Lincoln, and Chuckie Armstrong. It's time for change folks

3. If this team is able to make something of this year, and they certainly can only being 5 games back, it needs to happen now. At 17-25, their next 3 opponents are all struggling: San Diego, Baltimore (coming off a 13 game losing streak), and Minn. Seattle SHOULD be able to take 2-3 from all these teams, and in some instances, sweep. Otherwise, it's only going to widen the gap vs. the other teams in their division.

Seattle Mariners 2006 Blog

Let's give it up for Mr. Lopez of the Mariners 2006, my 1/8th of a season MVP for this team. Solid 2nd baseman who has filled in nicely at that #2 spot. He reminds me a little of Stan Javier w/ a little more pop in his bat. A solid season w/ a .280 batting average, 5 HR's, and a league leading 28 RBI's for a second baseman....not bad. My 2006 Goat so far? Mr. Richie "I'm not that sexy hitting .190" Sexson. .190? I mean, Dave Valle put up better numbers than him. Hit the cages, spend some extra time in BP, do something!!!!

Pitching? Where is Freddy Garcia is all I can ask. He's now 6-1 and DOMINATING! As I mentioned, Washburn is heading towards that 12-12 season I predicted, along w/ Pinero and Meche. .500 pitching=guess what? A .500 ballclub!

Holgrem leaning towards past 2006

This is good news.....we'll be honest hear @ SBB, we were on the fence w/ Holgrem before last season.

With a good GM, he's proven himself again as a top notch coach in this league. I think it's important for him to concentrate on coaching vs. player transactions, signings, etc.

All time Seattle #'s

Sports Illustrated recently ran an article on the all-time top sports #'s in history.......so, we thought why not do the same for Seattle. Here are some #'s that I think will be etched in Seattle fans memories forever.......

28: No, not Mr. Curt Warner, but 28 TD's that Shaun Alexander scored in 2005. I think it will take time for this record to set in, but I don't see anyone beating it anytime soon.

12: Total Gold Cups for Chip Hanauer, 7 of them in a row. Muncey finished w/ 8, Villwock has 4 currently...will there ever be another Chip?

1 Total # of Seattle Men's championships in over 30 years of participation....one that hurts most of these #'s

267: Ray Allen breaks the single season record for 3's by one player

14: Number of years it took the Mariners to post a winning record of .500 or better since the team started in 1977.

300: Gaylord Perry notches #300 while in an M's uniform

20: years in between Seahawks playoff wins....and they SHOULD have won the Superbowl had it not been for the refs

3-2: #1 seed Seattle loses playoff series to #8 Denver, who some consider the greatest upset in playoff history.

262: Ichiro breaks 84 year-old single season hits record....something I don't see anyone breaking for a while

1995: not so much a #, but a year, a year that saved Seattle baseball, that helped build Safeco, and that had the craziest baseball fans in a long, long time

80: Steve Largent, enough said

All other ideas welcome!

Seahawks new practice facility: opening in 2008

Ah, just another example of how cool it is having a billionaire owner......this thing is pretty sweet w/ 3 outdoor fields (1 grass and 2 that flubber stuff), AND a full indoor stadium (obviously, it's the flubber stuff....they still haven't invented a grass that can grow w/out sunlight)

There's a great posting on seahawks.com that showcases the facility

Putz the new Mariner closer?

Looks like that's the trend w/ his latest save from the 6-3 win over Tampa Bay. As much as we (SSB) have been on this guys case, heck, if he can get the job done, so be it! I still think this team needs some reshuffling to the line-up. Specifically, Richie Rich Sexson. .193 batting average? I mean, even Beltre's hitting .220 now, move him into the four spot until Sexson picks it up. Ichiro, Lopez, Kenji, and Ibanez are the bright stars for this team so far in 2006. This team is still only 4.5 games back in a very, very weak division

Oh by the way, the Sonics-Nuggets series of 1993 was voted the biggest upset in playoff history by SI.....GREAT!

Ask for, and you shall receive!

Our $6M closer is heading to the dark corners of the bullpen...will he emerge?

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/mariners/2002971954_webguardado04.html

Here's his stats...it seems like his only blow-up of his career is this year: Eddie Guardado

Well, we won't need much of a closer when we're down 3-0 in the first to Chicago....what is the story w/ Hernandez in the first inning?

It's time for Steady Eddie to TAKE A SEAT!!!!!

Put in Soriano, or Putz, or Bring back Ayala for Pete's Sake! Get this guy out of the closer role NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are we going to hear the same crap from Hargrove tomorrow? "He's still our guy." Eddie, get off the doughnuts and sit your ass down...you obviously have your mind on something other than winning games. Seattle would be 14-13 if this dough boy handn't blown 3 saves!!! 2 to Chicago on bottom of the ninth HR's. He's lost it folks....SIT DOWN!

Advertising at Major League Baseball Games

Anyone else sick of seeing every square inch of outfield wall used for advertising in baseball?

Go back to even 1995 when the M's were in the playoffs.....I've watched that game so many times, and it's amazing...nothing on the outfield walls. I know, I know, it's how the organizations make money...or is it? Let's be honest folks, these clubs are raking in the big bucks from TV deals, merchandise, and tickets...not advertising at the game. We, as fans, ultimately control what happens because w/out fans, there is no sports. So, I urge you to write a letter to your organization to voice your displeasure over seeing so many advertisements at Major League baseball games. Or better yet, boycott the games until something is changed. It's sick, and it needs to stop. That's why the NFL is so great....no ads on the field....yet. NBA? Does anyone actually watch the NBA anymore? I got tired when I noticed the Fedex sign on the court was bigger than the Miami Heat logo. The NBA is a joke when it comes to advertising.

Hawks draft picks, M's take 2 of 3, and more

Given that Seattle had the 31st pick in the draft, I'd say they made a good choice w/ what they had. Miami CB's are usally extremely quick and possess good cover skills. He didn't exactly light up it up stats wise (32 tackles, 3 INT's), but that could be in part to the fact that they didn't throw his way. I'm not all that familiar w/ Tapp or Sims, but word on the street (blogs, etc) indicate that they are good picks as well. Needless to say, given Ruskell's track record from last year's draft, I'm confident w/ his selections.

Onto the M's.....well, well, well. Like the stock market, they are up +2 points this week w/ heavy trading. Ok, enough stock talk, but they DID pull 2 out of 3 from Baltimore, which to me is impressive. Eddie's not quite back to being "Steady Eddie" just yet, but 2 for 2 in save opportunities are fine by me. Even though Beltre's hitting .150, his glove still showed some serious skills w/ that 9th inning stab to save the game. Let's hope the M's can keep the stock rising and hit .500!
