Seattle Seahawks Blog: Playoffs

I know we still have 1 week left this season, but the regular season is pretty much over for Seattle. Time to start looking at the playoffs and keys to get Seattle to the SB.

1. My #1 key? Crowd noise. Yup, the fans are going to have to "get hoarse" during these playoffs, even if our team gets down 14-0 early in one of these 2 games. We have HOME FIELD advantage folks and it's time for us to shine on the NFL pedestel.

2. Hasselbeck 3's C's: Just as he has done all year, he needs to stay Cool, Calm, and Consistant. Again, this team will not have been really challenged these last 3 weeks of the season and it's key for him to come out confident. He cannot have happy feet or make mistakes if we fall behind.

3. Defense: keep the pressure on the opposing team by blitzing. Coupled w/ key #1, crowd noise and blitzing = false starts....ask the Giants about those, I believe they have 14 of those against us when we played them at home.

4. Alexander, show some anger: He's our #1 cog and teams are going to come after him....he's going to need to play w/ more fire than ever. I would love for him to talk some smack after running someone over...same goes for Strong and the rest of the team. I strongly believe teams are going to come in and think they can bully us around because we are a somewhat soft team.....do the PUSHING, don't be pushed.

More to follow as we know more about our first round opponent.

Seahawks vs. Colts

Interesting game this week given the fact that Indy has nothing to play for. I'm under the impression they'll leave the starters in for the first quarter to run some plays they might be testing, but other than that, expect them to be pulled. Seattle should keep the pressure on Manning early, so the coaches get worried and pull him even earlier. Win equals home field for us and a rest for the starters vs. GB, so it's very, very important for us to win this game. Once again, I DO NOT WANT TO GO TO CHICAGO for a playoff game.

Prediction? Seattle 35-24

NFL weekly predictions

Here are my picks for this weekends games. A lot of playoff implications on the line this week.....

Atlanta at Tampa Bay: A must win for both teams, but more so for Atlanta. However, Atlanta has not been playing well of late, and even worse on the road. This will be a very, very interesting game given TB is coming off a 28-0 loss. I see TB winning 19-17
Buffalo at Cincinnati: Cinn's hot, period. Cinn 38-7
Dallas at Carolina: another game w/ playoff scenarios abound....however, Dallas is in a bad tail spin. Carolina 24-20
Detroit at New Orleans: Toilet Bowl #1: NO 6-3
Jacksonville at Houston: Jax all the way, 27-10
N.Y. Giants at Washington: Game of the week? Yeah, this is a big, big game for both teams. Washington is coming off a crushing win of Dallas while NYG continue to play strong. I'll give the nod to WA, 31-28
Pittsburgh at Cleveland: Pitt here, even w/ Cleveland playing better of late. Pitt 17-10
San Diego at Kansas City: Another MUST win for both teams, and this is my #2 game of the week. SD is coming off the huge win vs. Indy, so I don't see a let down here. KC has been struggling of late. I see SD in a nail biter.....25-24
San Francisco at St. Louis: Toilet bowl #2. Who would have thought St.Louis would be here at this time of the season? They'll have enough to beat SF. St. Louis 21-10
Tennessee at Miami: Toilet bowl #3: Ok, Miami has been playing better of late, so it's tough to put them in a toilet bowl. Still, these are two ugly franchises at this point. Miami here 26-13
Philadelphia at Arizona: Toilet bowl #4: AZ here in a squeaker, 10-3
Indianapolis at Seattle: Big game for Seattle, not so big for Indy. Our prayers are w/ Dungy. Seattle here 30-20
Oakland at Denver: once a proud rivalry, now a Denver romp.....Denver 45-14
Chicago at Green Bay: Boy, I'm going out on a limb here, only cause I hate Chicago and I'm pulling for Seattle to have home field advantage. GB in a Xmas day upset, 35-31
Minnesota at Baltimore: Minn has a very small chance of getting into the playoffs, however, Balt is going to play spoiler. Balt here, 24-17
New England at N.Y. Jets: NE's rolling, J-E-T-S spells "#3 pick in the 2006 NFL draft." NE here big, 34-3

5 Seahawks going to 2005 Pro Bowl

Kudos to the NFL for selecting Mack Strong to the Pro Bowl this year, a well deserved honor after 13 bruising years. He's lead the way for 9 consecutive RB's to gain 1,000 yards...nuff said.

Going w/ our no-name defense, not ONE defender was selected to the Pro Bowl. I think at least Rocky Bernard should have been considered w/ 8.5 sacks, leading NFL interior lineman. Again, being in Seattle, he probably does not get the national recognition he deserves.

Lebron James contract

This is just plain wrong. According the a popular Cleveland Newspaper, Lebron James' contract pays him MORE $ to play for a larger market team, such as in LA, NY, or Miami.

What a joke, I think I've lost respect for this guy now. As it does w/ all players...it all comes down to money.

"Rumors have circulated that LeBron James will force the Cavaliers to trade him to the New York Knicks at the end of the season. The major reasoning, according to a New York newspaper, is that James' Nike contract has a clause where he will make more money in a major market, like New York."

Seattle Seahawks Blog

Another big, big win. As ESPN's Tom Jackson noted on NFL Primetime, Seattle needed a game like this where they were down and needed to come back. Impressive outing by Mr. Hasselback, who I had serious doubts about this year. 3 TD's and no Int's or fumbles...he gets the game ball despite S. Alexander's strong performance. Too bad Chicago didn't lose....Seahawks fan, be prepared, that is a good, good football team. All we need to do is win 1 of the next 2 games to seel home field, and judging by how Atlanta played there, we DO NOT WANT TO GO TO CHICAGO.

I was impressed w/ T.Titans ability to keep our defenders away from Mr. McNair, who almost single handedly beat our team. Again, it did not look like we were blitzing much, and it hurt us in the early going. Even though we gave up a lot of points and yards, I give the Defense kudos for some key 4th down stops as well as making adjustments to pattern covers. Still, a bit more pressure on McNair in the early going and I think we're up 28-0 at half.

Up next? Indy, coming off a loss. This game gets more intriguing by the minute. Seattle still needs one win to get home field while Indy still really has nothing to play for. However, I still expect Indy to come out firing because they do not want to go into the playoffs 2-3 the last 3 weeks of the season. Key to that game is keeping pressure on Manning....did anyone else notice how much pressure SD's front four provided on Manning? I'm looking for our front four to do the same. Anyone seen Grant Winstrom? We could use a big game from him.

This weekend's game against Tenn SHOULD be a no-brainer, but let's hope the team stays focused and does not look ahead. Tenn doesn't have much going for them this year period, so go for the throat early and don't keep them in the game. Let's avoid injuries, get up big early, and rest SA, MH, the fourth quarter.

Remember folks, Hawks win, Chicago loses...we are IN for home field advantage. Huge, huge, huge.....I do NOT want this team to have to travel anywhere for the playoffs.

Mariners sign Everett

Are we going back to the days of signing Gorman Thomas? Or better yet, the Dinosaur ear? Unless this team signs Millwood, look out for ANOTHER 90 loss season in 06'. Everett is old and has had 1-2 good (not great) years in MLB. Unless they get serious production out of their younger pitching, they are in trouble. Not a big fan of Bavasi's moves so far this off-season.....

Week 14 NFL Predictions

Here are my picks and 2 bits on the NFL games this week along w/ the the current odds:

Tampa Bay at New England: Good game this week. NE has been on a roll of late and w/ Dillon back, in the snow...it's NE's game: 20-17 (odds makers: NE by 4.5)
Kansas City at N.Y. Giants: Another good game piting 2 high octain offenses against each other. KC is coming off a tough road lost to Dallas, while NYG are on an upswing after a victory in Philly. I see the momentum staying w/ NYG, 35-21 (odds makers: NYG by 3)
Denver at Buffalo: Denver should take care of Buff easily here, 24-13 (odds makers: Denv by 9)
Arizona at Houston: Reggie Bush Bowl? AZ in a sqeaker, 12-2 (odds makers: AZ by 1.5)
Carolina at New Orleans: NO has unfortunately suffered a rough season due to Katrina. Carolina big and easy in the big easy, 38-0 (odds makers: Ca by 9)
N.Y. Jets at Miami: also a battle of uglies, however, Miami has been playing better of late. I give them the nod, 21-9 (odds makers: Miami by 9)
Philadelphia at St. Louis: a couple of strong teams last year heading in the wrong direction. St.Louis plays well at home...that's about the only positive thing I can say about either team. St. Louis here, 28-21 (odds makers: St. by 3.5)
Pittsburgh at Minnesota: Pitt played well last week, however, remove the cold and the grass and you have a much different team. I'm big on rolls, of which Minn is on: Minn 23-20 (odds makers: Pitt by 3)
San Diego at Indianapolis: Bottom line, Indy is just about impossible to beat at home. If they don't take starters out, I'm seeing 35-20. If they are taking out, I STILL see Indy winning, 24-23 (odds makers: Indy by 7.5)
Seattle at Tennessee: Seattle should and WILL have an easy time w/ Tenn. Hawks 30-7 (odds makers: Seattle by 7)
San Francisco at Jacksonville: Jax on a roll, San Francisco on sushi roll. Jax big, 34-6 (odds makers: Jax by 15.5)
Cincinnati at Detroit: Cinn barely beat the Browns last week, but Detroit has some serious internal issues. Cinn 35-14 (odds makers: Cinn by 8)
Cleveland at Oakland: Also a battle of a few uglies. I believe Collins is back at the Staring QB for Oakland, so they should be able to take this one, 17-10 (odds makers: Oak by 3)
Dallas at Washington: A very compelling game. I think momentum is riding w/ Dallas right now and WA has too many offensive holes. Dallas in a squeaker, 21-20 (odds makers: WA by 3)
Atlanta at Chicago: Another great, great game this weekend. I'm pulling for Atlanta so Seattle can SOW up HF advantage. Vick throws for 400 yards and runs for 200! Atlanta 34-18. (odds makers: Chi by 3)
Green Bay at Baltimore: Ugly game again...I'll give it to Farve, 20-10 (odds makers: Balt by 3.5)

Darrell Jackson appears to be on his way back into the starting lineup this weekend vs. Tenn. I would normally have some hesitancy of this given our track record this year, however, we ARE missing a deep threat. Let's hope Holgrem keeps Mr. Jurevicius happy as he's been Hasselbeck's top go to guy of late. Engram is still Matt H's #1 receiver, but Joe J has been stellar w/ 8 TD's. Worst case scenario? D Jax comes back and starts dropping balls, although that is highly unlikely. To me, the best team in the NFL just got better.

Luke Ridnour

Anyone else find this guys stats difficult to comprehend? He's a 96% Free throw shooter, however, he's shooting 38 % from the field and even worse.....28% from the 3 point arc. Hey Luke, work on the jumper bud. His assist is up year over year, which is good, but his shooting percentage needs some serious work.

Sonics weekly

Fresh off the presses from the Sonics.....their weekly newsletter

This Week’s Opponents

Golden State: The Sonics enter this week’s matchup having dropped their previous two meetings with the Warriors, but own a 16-3 edge all-time at KeyArena (70-30 in Seattle, overall). Seattle and Golden State split a four-game set last season with each team posting one road win. The Sonics have gone 5-7 against the Warriors over the last three seasons after posting a 37-5 record in the previous 10.

Houston: Seattle managed just one win in four tries against Houston last season, getting swept at home by the Rockets for the first time in 12 seasons. Seattle averaged just 84.5 points in the four meetings, its lowest average against any Western Conference opponent. The Sonics and Rockets have split the season series in three of the past five years, and split the last 20 regular-season meetings overall.

Portland: After 180 all-time meetings, the I-5 rivals are separated by just two games with the Sonics holding a narrow 91-89 advantage. Seattle took three of four meetings last season but has won only once in its last six trips to Portland. On 3/24/05, the last time the Sonics traveled to the Rose Garden, Damien Wilkins posted a career-high 21 points.

Sonics in the Community

The Sonics and Storm will make their 13th annual visit to Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center (4800 Sand Point Way N.E., Seattle) today, Dec. 12, at 2:30 p.m. Sonics and Storm players, coaches, broadcasters and front-office members will distribute presents and spend time with the patients. The event is closed to the public but open to media. Media planning to attend should arrive at the “giraffe” entrance no later than 2:15 p.m.

Allen Climbs All-Time List

Sonics All-Star Ray Allen enters the week needing just three three-pointers to pass Tim Hardaway for fourth place on the NBA’s all-time three-pointers-made list. Allen is 20 treys shy of entering the top-three in league history. The NBA’s all-time top-five is as follows:

1. Reggie Miller 2,560

2. Dale Ellis 1,719

3. Glen Rice 1,559

4. Tim Hardaway 1,542

5. Ray Allen 1,540

NFL grass fields

It's unfortunate to see more and more NFL OUTDOOR teams switching from grass to the flubber stuff. It's much better than the old turf that ruined a few RB's careers (aka Curt Warner), but football is supposed to be played on GRASS...bottom line. Some recent cities that have switched: Baltimore, Cinn (which I can kind of understand from the weather there), NYG/NYJ (also makes a bit of sense given that 2 teams play there), and others. When you see a game like the Pitt game and you see all the mud on "The Bus", it makes you realize that getting muddy is part of the game.

UW hoop blog

Check out the quote from Mark Few on his game against Oklahoma State this last weekend:

Few called Oklahoma State "the toughest team, hand-to-hand, physically, that we played all year."

Something to be said about UW. UW needs to be a physical team and I think that's one thing you miss when doing the east coast/ west coast bias. Look at their opponent they lost to in the NCAA Tournament...Louisville out-muscled them for many reb's and played UW physical..something they didn't see much of in the Pac 10.

UW needs to be better prepared for this years tournament, physically...regardless of their seed.

Seattle Seahawks Blog

I know it's a bit early to start talking Superbowl, but w/ Carolina and Chicago losing, Seattle is looking good to have home field advantage throughout the playoffs. How are they doing at home you ask? How's 7-0 this season. At this point, I don't see anyone really challenging Seattle from the NFC. I know I sound a bit cocky, but I'm a strong believer that no one really scares me right now. The Giants barely beat Philly, which we crushed 42-0, Carolina lost to TB, and I think if Seattle uses a "box in one" w/ Trufant on S.Smith, we own them. Which leaves Chicago, a team that got crushed on the road vs. Pitts. I see the same results if they play in Seattle. Seattle has the most rounded team, offensively and defensively.

As far as yesterday's game, really no complaints. SA ran well (MVP of the NFL this year), Hasselbeck played strong, and the Rookie of the Year Tatupu was stellar again....he is ALL OVER THE PLACE on D, always at the ball.

They have a "should win" game next week vs. Tenn, then comes Indy into town. That will be an interesting game. Anyone have thoughts on how that game will be played? Seattle will still be vying for home field advantage in that game, so I see them keeping starters in, etc. I'm thinking Indy will keep their regulars in for 3 quarters and assess what the score is. 16-0 is one thing, but losing Manning/Harrison/James over an injury in the 4th quarter of a game that they don't reaaaally need to win is another. It will be an interesting game from a strategy perspective, that's for sure.

Week 14 NFL predictions

Week 14 NFL predictions for yours truely, SSBG:

Chicago at Pittsburgh: this is going to be a great game...it's a must win for both. I like Pitts chances and I'm pulling for them for Seattle home field reasons. Pitt 24-20
Cleveland at Cincinnati: no brainer here, Cinn big 35-7
Houston at Tennessee: battle of a few uglies, Tenn 20-13
Indianapolis at Jacksonville: another compelling game this week, although Jax minus Lefwich=loss. Indy 28-13
New England at Buffalo: NE seems to be on the right track of late: NE all over Buff 24-10
Oakland at N.Y. Jets: ex-UW stud Tui starts for Oakland. He should be able to get the team up and down the field for a few FG's. Oak 13-7
St. Louis at Minnesota: Minn's hot, St.Louis is NOT. Minn 24-12
Tampa Bay at Carolina: another top game this week....I have to pull for TB again simply for Seattle home field purposes: TB 20-17
N.Y. Giants at Philadelphia: used to be an NFC classic, but Philly's in the toilet. NYG big, 38-7
San Francisco at Seattle: Hawks in a no-brainer, 30-14
Washington at Arizona: WA is holding on for dear life for playoff hopes and AZ is pitiful: WA 23-17
Baltimore at Denver: Broncs at home in Dec=automatic win. Denver big, 45-10
Kansas City at Dallas: Dallas at home is also tough and KC is not a good road team. Dallas in a shootout, 35-31
Miami at San Diego: SD all the way, 20-9
Detroit at Green Bay: Farve pulls this one out, 21-20
NO @ Atlanta: Atlanta big, 28-7

Seahawks beat the Eagles 42-0 with no talent and "luck".

Yeah, right Madden!

Everyone knows that it is rare for any defense to pick up fumbles and snag interceptions - and run almost all of them into the endzone for TD's........but either way the Seahawks won the game: 42-0. Yes, that is a 0, the Eagles did not muster up one point and for all of this we get, "I don't know if the Seahawks are good or if the Eagles are really bad." from Madden and crew." Geeeez.

No one is asking for a "Yes, folks, these are the future Super Bowl champs." but come on Hasselback's throw back to the left while running out of bounds on the first series of the game was solid and if he had needed to show any further "talent" to prove that the Seahawks can play, I believe he/they would have. The fact is though, there wasn't a need, the defense took care of the Eagles and the Eagles helped take care of themselves.

The funny thing is that in this game, specifically, the Eagles may have nuked their own ship, but the Hawks are 10 and 2 and all I have to ask is, how does a team win 10 games by being lucky? I don't get it (Madden).

In short, the Seahawks will beat the Panthers and as long as we keep getting no respect from the east coast and "associated TV sports staff" then that's just fine with Seattle fans.

Seahawks Monday Night Football

What a game.....I was soaking up every minute of it until the end. Madden and Michaels couldn't stop talking about whether or not this was a really good Seattle team or a bad Philly team. Know what fellas? This reaaaally is a good football team. I mean, is the press going to continue to ask this question until we are 15-2 and in the Superbowl?

The intro of Shaun Alexander last night was classic....I hope everyone by now in this league knows who he is. Another solid 2 TD's and strong runs last night. Madden mentioned MVP w/ him and LT, but he of course mentioned Payton Manning for MVP. Whatever John, we'll see them in week 15 and PROVE who the real MVP.

Some game balls: Tatupu is the real deal, once again. There is NO OTHER rookie playing as well as this guy, bottom line. It would be a tragedy if he's not rookie of the year, on offense or defense. Other game balls? How about the fact that we BLITZED last night! My God, I think I saw 6-8 blitzes throughout the night, sending Boulware, Tatupu, et al. The D looked really good and now we have a stronger turnover ratio % following that game. Finally, Walter Jones. Anyone else notice that guy didn't have a lick of dirt on him? Did you see some of the blocks he laid last night? Pro bowl 2006 here we come....

Dare I say that "The Blue Wave is on a roll?" Time for another Seahawks Music Video :)

UW Gonzaga game 2005

What a game...an instant classic that if covered on the East Coast would be on ESPN Classic tomorrow. I have never seen such energy from the Hec Ed crowd, nor have I ever seen such an amazing performance from both teams. Adam Morrison is the real deal, he was unstopable! Turnarounds, off balance, 3's, plus "and one" dunks...he is a top 5 talent who will go high in the NBA draft. Do I think the results would have been different had not Raivio gone out? Tough question. UW was really containing him and he was not much of a factor even when he was playing. His backup, Pargo, however, did struggle: 2-8 shooting w/ 6 turnovers.

I really liked the play of UW this game. I will even go out on a limb and say that I think this years team is better than last years: stronger balance, more size, and better outside shooting (sorry, I was never much of a Tre Simmons fan). Appleby? Pure shooter and has uncanny range. As a friend of mine indicated last night, "eatin's good in the UW neighborhood." Jamaal Williams and Bobby Jones are solid forwards who are consistant in the clutch. Dentmon? He's a Freshman and he's putting up 17 pts/ 6 assist in a huge game...he's solid. Brockman is still young and looked the part last night....his time will come. I think Brandon Roy was a little to "up" for the game last night. Poor shot selection and 5 turnovers will not exactly get you scouted well in the NBA. To his credit, however, he was given the tough task of guarding Morrison, who NO ONE person could have stopped last night. The one guy that I wish would get more PT is J.Smith. He also has a sweet jumper and great leaping ability. Good news is that he's only a soph, so his time will come. Think how good this team will be when Jensen returns? Final Four here we come.......

Week 13 NFL Predictions

Here are my picks for this weekends games:

Atl @ Carolina: huge game for both teams. I'm rooting for Atlanta for Seahawks home field advantage. Atl 27-24

Buff @ Miami: toilet bowl game, Miami 17-12

Cinn @ Pitts: No matter how good the Cinn offense is, Pitt is just too good at home. Pitt 30-24

Dallas @ NYG: Game of the week. Both teams are loaded offensively, but I give the nod to NYG considering how well the played Seattle. NYG 24-17

GB @ Chicago: Chi D's is too good, and they are at home. Chi 28-7

Houst @ Balt: another toilet bowl: Balt 17-10

Jax @ Cleveland: a toughie pick this week w/out Lefwich in the mix for Jax. I still think Jax has enough weapons to prevail. 24-14

Minn @ Det: Minn on a roll of late and Det is in shambles: Minn 20-9

TB @ NO: TB has been on a roll of late.....TB 35-23

Tenn @ Indy: Indy's roll isn't going to stop here....42-17

AZ @ SF: Toilet game of the week! Can you say...Reggie Bush game? SF in a squeeker.....9-6

WA @ St. Louis: For whatever reason, St.Louis continues to find ways to win....I see this trend continuing this week: 24-17

Den @ KC: Another game of the week, although, Denver is reaaaally on a roll. Denv prevails, 34-20

NYJ @ NE: NE is still vying for a playoff spot. NE 34-10

Oak @ SD: SD is coming off a big win @ WA. SD 35-23

Sea @ Philly: A tougher game than odds makers are probably predicting. Philly is in a heap of trouble right now: Seattle 30-17

I'll have more on the Seattle game in a later blog
