I was recently questioned this by a SBB visitor and I thought to myself, it's got to be the Gerald Henderson from Boston for their #1 pick (who unfortunately happened to be Len Bias). They quickly pointed out to me the following, which is great insight:
----------------------------------------------
Wins per year:
1967-68: 23 wins
68-69: 30
69-70: 36
70-71: 38
71–72: 47
"Are we noticing the upward trend? The next season… 72-73 only 26 wins. I thought how in the hell does that happen. I check it out… and find that Lenny Wilkens was the point guard and consistently averaged around 20 points per game. In 71-72 he averaged 18 points and 9.5 assists. In the off-season they trade him to Cleveland for Butch Beard. Butch comes in and averages 6.6 points per game in his only season with the supes. We go down to 26 wins. Which delay’s us winning a championship until the 79 season. Then 1980 is Magic Johnson’s rookie year and the Supes are left for a tough decade. Wilkens for Beard… the worse Sonics trade ever!"
