Ryan Capes airs a historic 310 ft jump at Pacific Raceways in Kent, Wash.
Ryan Capes shatters Trigger Gumm's motorcycle distance jumping record of 277feet, and goes for a historic 310 foot 4 inch at Pacific Raceways in Kent, Wash.
Monster Energy's Ryan Capes -Unleashed the Beast- and did the unfathomable this past weekend when he launched his Pro Circuit-tuned Honda CR250 through the air, over the length of an entire football field – and, basically, lived to tell about it.
It wasn't if it was when, said Capes of going 310 feet 4 inches. I just need the right place and the right time. And to everybody's surprise that all came together on Saturday.
When it's all said and done, nobody goes bigger than Capes. And, like the barrier-breaking athletes before him such as Dr. Roger Bannister, who broke the three minute mile barrier, Javier Sotomayor, who was the first to clear eight feet in the high jump and Sergey Bubka, who topped 20 feet in the pole vault, Capes now owns a magical record in the sport of motorcycle distance jumping that nobody will ever equal the first to jump 300 feet.
It hasn't really set in yet, said Capes. I mean, the way it came about was kind of unexpected. I'd have like to have done it in Los Angeles or Vegas or something, but you gotta take these things when they come. So just being the first to jump over 300 is pretty rad. I'll always have that going for me, which is nice.
Here is the link to watch his record breaking jump:

Here is an image from his 260 foot jump awhile back - HUGE!

NEW LOOK to our seattle sports blog site
How's everyone like the new site? Ah, a peaceful weekend w/out the stress of watching a Hawks game. There were some good games this weekend in the NFL. W/ Philly losing again, Seattle really has an opportunity to put themselves amongst the elite w/ a win this weekend.
Sonic seasons starts in a few days....anyone have any predictions as to how they'll finish. I'm feeling a 46-36 type of a year for this team.

Seattle Sounders were crowned champions of the United Soccer Leagues 1st Division
The Seattle Sounders were crowned champions of the United Soccer Leagues First Division after defeating the Richmond Kickers 4-3 in the penalty kick round of the USL First Division Championship match Saturday night at Qwest Field. In his final game as a Sounder, defender Scott Jenkins scored the winning penalty kick before Richmond goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale hit the crossbar in the seventh round of penalty kicks to give the Sounders their third USL title.
An intense match saw a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation. Richmond midfielder Sascha Gorres bagged a brilliant goal in the first half to put the Kickers up 1-0, and Seattle forward Maykel Galindo got a much-deserved equalizer midway through the second. Both sides were reduced to 10 men late in regulation after Seattle midfielder C.J. Klaas and Richmond midfielder Joey Worthen were shown red cards following a tussle in the Seattle penalty area.
Sounders goalkeeper Preston Burpo was named the game’s most valuable player for an outstanding performance in regulation and for a huge save during the decisive penalty kick round.

The Rainiers have released the 2006 schedule!
For the first time in several seasons, the Rainiers will open the 2006 season at home on April 6 at 7:05 p.m against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. Other highlights of the 2006 schedule include the first visit to Tacoma by the Round Rock Express. In 2005 the Edmonton Trappers relocated to Round Rock. The Rainiers visited the Austin, Texas suburb, but due to the Pacific Coast League's unbalanced schedule, host the teams from the American Conference every other year. The Albuquerque Isotopes, New Orleans Zephyrs, and the Oklahoma Redhawks also visit Cheney Stadium in 2006. For the complete 2006 Tacoma Rainiers schedule, click HERE. The promotional schedule will be released at a later date, but highlights include 12 fireworks shows and the return of fan favorites Salute to Armed Forces Night, Little League Day, and the Mother's day Diamond Dig! Game times will also be released at a later date.

Chi-sox win series
Congrats to a town that has waited a long, long, long time for a WS. Our poor Mariners still have NOT been to a WS and are a LONG way from. Let's hope Bozo (Bavasi) makes some smart offseason moves and we get back in the swing of things.

Huge win for Seattle Seahawks
Wow, did luck finally come our way or what? That was a huge, huge win. W/ 3 of our top players out (Jackson,Engram,Hamlin), we some how pulled out a win. Credit should go to the D, they really stepped it up. 2 INT's and 5 sacks was the difference in the ballgame, bottom line. I generally get on Hasselback for this type of a game, but I think he played smart given his dilapidated WR group. I still wish Holgrem would mix up the play calling a bit and throw in some trickery once in a while, but probably not called for in this tight of a game.
Up next? A well deserved BYE week followed by a pesky AZ team. Hopefully the week off can give Jackson and Engram time to heal.

Worst Trade in Soups history?
I was recently questioned this by a SBB visitor and I thought to myself, it's got to be the Gerald Henderson from Boston for their #1 pick (who unfortunately happened to be Len Bias). They quickly pointed out to me the following, which is great insight:
----------------------------------------------
Wins per year:
1967-68: 23 wins
68-69: 30
69-70: 36
70-71: 38
71–72: 47
"Are we noticing the upward trend? The next season… 72-73 only 26 wins. I thought how in the hell does that happen. I check it out… and find that Lenny Wilkens was the point guard and consistently averaged around 20 points per game. In 71-72 he averaged 18 points and 9.5 assists. In the off-season they trade him to Cleveland for Butch Beard. Butch comes in and averages 6.6 points per game in his only season with the supes. We go down to 26 wins. Which delay’s us winning a championship until the 79 season. Then 1980 is Magic Johnson’s rookie year and the Supes are left for a tough decade. Wilkens for Beard… the worse Sonics trade ever!"

NEED YOUR OPINION: Seattle Sports
Ok, I want to poll the visitors on which team do you think will end Seattle's drought to enter a major sporting event championship.
Hawks: no Superbowl visit in 28 year franchise history
Soups: no NBA championship since 96'
Mariners: no World Series visit in 29 year franchise history
W/ the Astros/Chisox going to the WS this year, the Mariners are one of only 5 teams that have a longer drought: TX, Cubs, Colorado, D-Rays, and WA/Montreal.
I'll submit results next week!

Dallas Game
Tough game this week. I don't want to say this is a "must win," but this will definitely boost this team into the elite of the NFL. Seattle could REALLY use some help from the crowd this game and I hope they get it. A 5-2 record going into the bye week will feel a lot better than a 4-3 record. This game is really going to come down to 2 things: stopping Dallas by effective blitzing, and a smart game plan from Holgrem. It's going to be a close game, but I'm taking Seattle 21-17.

Hamlin
Just when the team seemed on the right path....this is very disappointing. We should all wish him a speedy recovery, however, it was a really, really stupid decision on his part. If we give up a ton of yards this weekend...mark my words, there will be a ton of bickering amongst the local media and Holgrem about the missing Safety.

Hawks D
I must say, I'm not exactly all that impressed w/ our D this year (ONCE AGAIN). Through 6 games, sacks (18) and forced fumbles (4, 3 recovered)are good, but 3 INT's isn't cutting it. We're currently ranked #23rd in terms of INT's, #13 in total defense. It will be interesting to see how this team adapts w/out Hamlin. I would also say that we need Dyson back ASAP w/ Hamlin being out. Expect Dallas to put up some big yards through the air this weekend.

Another solid W
That's how you beat poor teams. You get to em' early, and you don't let them back in the game. Can someone please sign Alexander to a 5 year deal? What's the hold up? It's not like Allen is hurting for $!
Big test this week and I hope we have revenge on our minds w/ Dallas in town. Dallas has been playing extremely well of late, especially Keyshawn and Glenn. W/ Hamlin probably out (did anyone else see that fight he was in outside of Pioneer Square?), it's going to come down to us stopping the deep threat. The "Tuna" also likes to call a good deal of trick plays, especially against every day average Holgrem. It'd be nice for a change if we through some trickery into the game as well FOR ONCE!

next up: The Texans

We come into week #6 w/ a golden opportunity to put ourselves 2 games up in the NFC West. St. Louis has a toughy w/ a Monday night battle vs. Indy, and w/ their head coach out, I find it difficult to have them pull this one off. The hawks, on the other hand, should have NO problem handling Houston: a home game, an 0-5 team, hawks coming off a big win. What must NOT happen is a major let down.
A couple of good articles on what's going on this weekend in week 6:

Let's just face the facts: Swift is a joke for the Sonics
Here's a GREAT quote from guy...keep in mind, he was the 12th pick overall people:
"I know I'm not going to be a scoring option," said Swift, who appeared in 16 games as a rookie out of high school. "My job is going to be to rebound and block shots; that's what I'm going out there trying to do."
Seattle Times
I'm not a scoring option? This has bust written all over it!

BIG, BIG, WIN
Well, well, well, they certainly fooled me this weekend. Wow, that was an impressive game vs. St. Louis. When you consider that they were w/out D.Jackson and Engram, this team really proved something to me. Especially Hasselbeck, who lived up to his big offseason contract. Jurevicius also had a huge game w/ 137 yards receiving. Biggest offseason pickup? Yeah, and he deserves more playing time even w/ the WR's coming back. Who impresses me the most? Tatupu. 9 tackles and a pick and he's EVERYWHERE on D. What a great, great draft pick we got from him. Up next? A sour Houston team that we should easily beat, followed by a RED hot Dallas team. Seattle should have revenge on their minds after that game last year on Monday night.

Hawks vs. Rams: Game 5
Well, here we are again, in the middle of your typically average Seahawk season, w/ another typical situation: Big road game, can take the lead in the division, and pull ahead of the Rams. Can they do it? I doubt it. What do you see seperating this team from the last 3 years heading into this game? We've lost 37-20, 27-22, and 23-12 these last 3 years in St.Louis. Yes, the D is improved, yes, Seattle has lost to what I think 2 solid teams, Jax and Wa on the road. But at some point in time, the excuses run out. GREAT teams figure out how to win these games, not "good" or "average" teams. Once again, it's the Rams, 24-17.

UW gets Hawes
This is the biggest news to hit Seattle sports in a long, long time. This is bigger than the Boz, signing Beltre, getting Ray Allen...any of them. This move puts UW in SERIOUS contention for #1 in 2 years. They will be solid this year, but look out in 2006. They should be rated #1 and should be expected to win the national title.

Interesting stat
Still think Hasselbeck was a smart decision for QB and a big contract? How about these stats from the Times:
"Holmgren dropped to 0-4 lifetime against Washington, and Hasselbeck, despite playing well, dropped to 11-20 as a starter on the road in his Seahawks career, 4-9 in Eastern-time games."
Are you kidding me? 11-20? We NEED A NEW QB!!! Invest in youth for once Seattle!

Hawks lose again on the road
Well, they played well, Hasselbeck made little mistakes, and they still lose. Tough game. They've now just got to pick themselves up and look to St. Louis, who is also coming off a loss. Seattle needs to go for the throat against the Rams, show some anger for losing against WA.
As for the play calling at the end of the game by Holgrem, I agree w/ a few runs up the middle vs. a play action. A pass and you think Green Bay playoff game all over again. Steve Kelly of the Seattle Times had an interesting article on this game....should be read.
